Description

Stan Protect is a clear, penetrating tannin blocker that prevents the bleeding and leaching of tannins from woods’ high in extractives and also the discolouration of finishes on interior softwoods.

Forming a barrier within the wood, Stan Protect blocks the tannins, preventing them from reaching the surface where they will discolour a finish or stain.

Why use Stan Protect?

Stan Protect prevents discoloration of finishes caused by tannin bleed/staining and also extends the life of a finish. It improves penetration and opacity of finishes and prevents premature aesthetic and physical degradation of the finish.

Ideal Uses for Owatrol’s Stan Protect

  • Exterior and interior, vertical or horizontal wooden surfaces
  • Can be used on new or old un-coated wood
  • Use before application of opaque or semi-transparent stains
  • Recommended for woods high in tannin such as cedar, American redwood, oak, chestnut etc
  • Use on shingles, cladding, chalets, skirting boards, doors and more

General Directions:

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and previous coatings.
  • Treat mildew with a 50/50 bleach/water solution. Scrub solution on to surface and allow to stand for 10 to 15 minutes; rinse thoroughly.
  • After cleaning and/or stripping, allow wood to dry 2 to 3 good drying days or until it has reached a moisture content of 18 % or less before applying Stan Protect.
  • Stan Protect can only be applied to bare wood surfaces. All other finishes must be completely and thoroughly removed.
  • If necessary, sand surface after cleaning and/or stripping (80 grit or coarser depending on wood species).

New wood surfaces:

  • Test wood for absorbency by sprinkling water on the surface. If water is absorbed quickly, the grain is sufficiently “open” and the surface is ready for finishing, proceed to ‘Application’.

If water is not absorbed then proceed as follows:

  • Treat wood with Aquanett or Prepdeck, neutralise with Net-Trol, alternatively mechanically or manually abrade surface with 80 grit paper or coarser depending on wood species.
  • Clean and dust off to remove all loose wood particles.

Weathered wood surfaces (untreated):

  • Wood that has weathered longer than 12 months or turned grey should be cleaned with Net-Trol to remove all loose wood fibres, dirt and other surface contaminants.
  • If wood is severely contaminated, clean with Aquanett or Prepdeck and neutralise with Net-Trol.

Previously treated surfaces (oiled, paint, stain, varnish etc):

All previous finishes must be completely and thoroughly removed.

Oils and sealers: Strip with Aquanett or Prepdeck, neutralise with Net-Trol.

Solvent (oil or alkyd based finishes): Strip with Dilunett, neutralise with Net-Trol.

Acrylic finishes (Water-based): Strip with Prepdeck, neutralise with Net-Trol.

Other finishes e.g. 2 pack epoxies, urethanes etc : Strip with DSP 800, neutralise surface with a suitable solvent – Acetone, White Spirits, Methylated Spirits etc

NB – Hardwoods inc. exotic hardwoods and woods rich in tannins i.e. Cedar, Douglas Fir, Teak, Ipe, Iroko etc may darken with Aquanett, Prepdeck and Dilunett, neutralising with Net-Trol immediately after rinsing will lighten and restore the woods colour.
