Description

Crackle Spirit Step 1 is the first step in a system for creating a contemporary crackle effect (porcelain type cracks) on any surface.

Consisting of 2 methods, Crackle Spirit allows you to create a crackle effect on previously coloured surfaces. Or, you can mix colours in to the Crackle Spirit, creating a two tone crackle effect.

Ideal uses for Crackle Spirit

  • Give any surface a contemporary crackle effect
  • Use before application of Crackle Spirit – Step 2
  • Revamp your interior design
  • Decorate home ornaments

Before you start

  • Cover and protect everything you do not wish to coat.
  • Apply between 5°C and 25°C.
  • Do not apply to hot surfaces.

Surface Preparation

  • Surfaces must be in good sound condition, clean, dry and free of all grease, oil and other surface contamination.
  • Meticulously clean surface using a suitable cleaning agent depending on the substrate and contamination e.g. Acetone, Hot Soapy Water (rinse thoroughly) etc.

Non-Porous and Difficult Surfaces (Plastic, Glass, Stainless Steel, Non-Ferrous Metals etc)

Application of Crackle Spirit

Use as is – do not thin. Stir or shake well before use.

Method 1: Coloured Backgrounds:

  • Apply a generous coat of Crackle Spirit – Step 1 to a dry, previously painted or coloured surface.
  • Allow to dry. The dried product remains sticky.
  • Apply a thin coat of Crackle Spirit – Step 2.
  • Cracks will start to appear after a few minutes.
  • Allow to dry before handling.
  • The cracks will show as transparent.

Note: Once the Crackle Spirit – Step 2 is dry and for a different effect a water-based/acrylic paint may be applied to the cracked surface and any excess wiped off while the paint is still wet.

The wiped of paint will remain in the cracks and the background colour will be revealed.

See demonstration video in gallery for more information.

Method 2: Adding Colour to Crackle Spirit

Base-coat:

  • Add a water-based/acrylic paint or universal colourant (3% – 7%) in you colour of choice to Crackle Spirit – Step 1. Ensure colour is well mixed in.
  • Apply a generous coat of the coloured Crackle Spirit – Step 1.
  • Allow to dry. The dried product remains sticky.

Topcoat:

  • Add a water-based/acrylic paint or universal colourant (3% – 7%) in you colour of choice to Crackle Spirit – Step 2. Ensure colour is well mixed in.
  • Apply a thin coat of the coloured Crackle Spirit – Step 2.
  • Cracks will start to appear after a few minutes.
  • Allow to dry before handling.
  • The cracks will show as the base colour.

Note: The size of the cracks desired depends on the application of Crackle Spirit – Step 1. The thicker the application, the larger the crack size.
