Description
Substrate preparation
Clean accurately the surface of the wood that must be well dried (10 –14% humidity) and free from any trace of grease, waxes or resins. Because of cellulose hydrophile nature, waterborne products tend to lift the grain of the wood, thus creating rough surfaces. Therefore, it is very important to make an accurately sanding with a 150 grit paper for soft woods and a 180 grit paper for hard woods. We dissuade you from using steel wool for the substrate preparation because it can cause bluish spots.
Drying
Waterborne products must be dried at temperatures above 15°C and relative humidity preferably not higher than 85%. Beyond these limits drying times are longer. Drying should be performed in rooms with forced air circulation, preferably with dehumidified and slightly warm air (28-30°C).
Topcoat application
AM0623/NN can be overcoated with Hydroplus exterior-grade waterborne products. It can also be overcoated with solvent-based products, but in this case the waterborne preservative woodstain must be well dried (2 – 3 days of drying). Since a wide variety of systems are available (nature of products, means of drying), we always recommend checking for compatibility before application (adhesion test). Door and window frames and wooden products only treated with intermediate basecots without any topcoat, do not screen the wood from the attack of water, with consequent wood cracks.
Preservation of wood stains
Once the can has been opened, the waterborne protective wood stain may rot because of the attack of bacteria, moulds and fungi commonly present in the air. This phenomenon is easily detectable because of the bad smell, increase of viscosity, mould on the surface and change of colour. This problem may take place also in case of products left for a long time in vessels for dipping or flow-coating application, mainly during summertime. The use of tap water, a frequent cleaning of the plant (possibly with disinfectant solutions) and the periodic addition of XA4051/00 bactericide at 0.1-0.2% increase preservation of the products used. As disinfectant we recommend a solution of 2% of XA4051/00 in water. See technical data sheet relating to XA4051/00.
Special instructions
-
Stir well before use.
-
Store at temperatures above 5°C (can be damaged by the cold) and not exceeding 35°C.
-
Coating residues (washing water, booth water, used coatings) must be disposed of in accordance with
applicable current legislation. Do not pour residues down drains.
-
On tannin-rich woods we dissuade you from using steel wool for the substrate preparation because it
can cause bluish spots.
